CANOWINDRA CASHES IN ON AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT FUNDING

Canowindra’s main street will undergo a one million dollar makeover under Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Gaskill Street will benefit from a refresh thanks to the $1,059,250 federal funding boost, which will be used to upgrade and expand pedestrian and shared access pathways, and to install new pathway lighting. The heritage building façades will be restored to ensure they remain full of charm for generations to come. Street trees, furniture, monuments and signage will be mounted, with new pedestrian safe crossing points and drainage works to be completed. In addition, an open space near the Belubula River will be created, while new parking signage will be fitted to identify caravan and long vehicle parking locations around town.

Cabonne Council will oversee the project, which plans to enhance accessibility on the main street, and create a stronger link between the town centre and river precinct.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee, said the project will build on Canowindra’s rich heritage, boosting tourism in the town. “From the Junction watering hole to the Railway Cottage, Gaskill Street is a true Aussie treasure – with the town centre protected by the National Trust,” said Minister Gee. “Visitors to Canowindra love its charm and its history, making it a must-see town on any tour of the Central West – that has even featured in major movies.

“While tourist numbers had been on the way up over the past decade, the drought and the COVID-19 pandemic threw a spanner in the works, crippling local businesses reliant on the tourist dollar. “That’s why I’m delighted to announce $1,059,250 in federal funding to spruce up Gaskill Street, strengthening its postcard-appeal. It’s a wonderful investment for the future of this vibrant community.

“This project will be a key driver of COVID-19 recovery by encouraging more tourists to mark Canowindra on their map. The infrastructure improvements will benefit the day-to-day of local residents and businesses, by improving walkways and crossings,” said Mr Gee.
