Fighting for Reform

In the aftermath of the harrowing storms and floods that ravaged our communities in 2022, my commitment to advocating for the wellbeing of our region has been unwavering. Specifically, my focus has been on holding insurers accountable for their response to these catastrophic events, ensuring that the concerns of our residents and businesses are not overlooked or dismissed.

I wasted no time in addressing the Prime Minister directly, urging for a thorough parliamentary inquiry into the conduct of insurers in the wake of the 2022 storms and floods.

The inquiry would aim to shed light on the actions, or lack thereof, of insurance companies and to provide a platform for the voices of those affected, spanning communities such as Eugowra, Molong, Canowindra, Cudal, and Wellington in the Central West.

The stories of heartache and frustration from our region have echoed loud and clear, highlighting the need for accountability and change within the insurance industry.

Details of Inquiry Progress

22 May 2023

During Question Time on 22 May 2023, I directly called on the Prime Minister to hold an inquiry into the response from insurance companies during the 2022 floods. My question to the Prime Minister was:

“Prime Minister, in the central west of New South Wales communities like Eugowra, Molong, Cudal and Canowindra were devastated by the storms and floods of last year. The stories of heartbreak and tragedy have been made worse by the shocking and cold-hearted treatment of many local residents by some insurance companies. The anger in our communities is white hot, and I don't think we're alone. Will your government support a parliamentary inquiry into the response of insurance companies to recent natural disasters in Australia?”

Where to now?

The launch of the inquiry marked a significant step towards accountability and transparency within the insurance industry. Over the course of its proceedings invaluable insights and recommendations emerged. Testimonies from experts, stakeholders, and individuals directly impacted by the disasters underscored the urgent need for reforms.

Key themes of transparency, accountability, and fairness for policyholders emerged as focal points for action.

While strides have been made in the wake of the inquiry, our journey towards comprehensive reform is far from complete. Positive developments, including improvements to claims processes and bolstered disaster preparedness measures, signal progress. However, challenges persist, necessitating continued vigilance and advocacy. It remains imperative that we champion the rights of those affected by natural disasters, pushing for reforms that prioritise the resilience and well-being of our communities.

In the face of adversity, our resolve remains steadfast. Together, as a united community, we have the power to effect meaningful change and build a future that is more resilient and equitable for all Australians.
